LOCOMOTION
Locomotion is an electroacoustic work that captures the sounds of transit by train and transforms them into music. The soundscape of this work is informed by recordings that have been made along the Redfern to Carlton line.
Each platform along this train line has a subtly different sound to it, which can then be transcribed and turned into pitches and melodies that form the backbone of this work. These pitches play against each other in reverberant drones and music-box style themes, all of which are performed by instruments constructed from recorded samples and archival recordings. Hissing whistles, archival recordings of steam engines and low resonant bass tones construct a rich score that is immersive and evocative of the experience of transit.
