CRYPTOPHONICS

Cryptophonics is a multimedia work in progress that focuses on number stations. These number stations have been used to transmit coded messages to spies since the Cold War, and are still used to this day. There are many mysteries surrounding number stations, and this mystery is mirrored by the sounds found in these transmissions - ambient noise, bursts of morse code, voices barking out strings of numbers and letters in various languages - with seemingly no rime or reason behind these discrepancies between stations.

The soundscape of this work consists of ambient drones made from recordings of these radio stations, which are then paired with declassified archival video footage. The end result will be a work steeped in the aesthetics of international espionage, with ciphers woven into both its minute details and overarching structure.
